Lesson learnt from the legend

After doing all the research regarding the legend of this Makam Mahsuri or precisely Mahsuri's legend, I think that Mahsuri's legend gives lots of valuable lessons not only limited to the people of Langkawi, but to the people around the world. For example, we should not try to accuse someone of wrongdoings without any further investigation or definite proof. What do we get from accusing the innocent ones? Guilty. What if the person we had accuse committed suicide or being executed, but they are actually innocent? And the moment we found the truth, we will feel guilty. Can we even bring back the person to life? No!

Besides that, we should learn to listen to other people explanation before putting down any judgmental views. In my opinion, things like this still occur till today.

Legends might not be true, but lessons that awaits us to learn from it are valuable. Learn from it as it gives knowledgeable lesson.

Langkawi, 2013

It seems that seven generation had passed since the curse befall upon Langkawi as told by the folk. Langkawi has now become one of the most tourism place in Malaysia. As the legend become famous for its uniqueness and facts that made it might not be just a legend, Makam Mahsuri also has become one of the most must-visit historical place not only in Langkawi, but in Malaysia too. Makam Mahsuri has attracted tourists from all around the world.

There are also other places located near Makam Mahsuri which is also a must-visit place for those who travel to Langkawi Island.

(Shape of pregnant woman laying down can be seen)

One of it is Tasik Dayang Bunting which also has it own legend. According to the people beliefs, the lake has mystical powers which helps barren woman to bear children. The legend foretold that there is once a woman who give birth to a baby who died after seven days. The father of the baby, sad by the news threw it to the lake, ended up being Tasik Dayang Beranak which is called Tasik Dayang Bunting nowdays as what we had seen.

Besides that, there are also places like Gunung Raya and Gunung Mat Cincang which also have its own legends.

Gunung Mat Cincang

According to the legend told by the folks, Mat Raya's son was interested in marrying Mat Cincang's daughter. However, Mat Cincang's is not in agreement of letting his daughter to marry Mat Raya's son as Mat Raya's son does not depict good behavior. But, much to Mat Cincang's displeasure, the wedding did take place. Unfortunately, a fight occur between the two during the wedding day. During the fight, Mat Sawar intervened and the two ended up reconciling. The three of them then changed their form into what we had seen today. The interesting part is that, Bukit Sawar is located in between Gunung Raya and Gunung Mat Cincang.

There are other interesting places to visit, but I highlight these two place as it have its own legends like Makam Mahsuri :)

Curse which lasts for SEVEN generation...

Non stop rain in Langkawi

Mahsuri had landed a great curse of misfortune towards the people of Langkawi as she muttered her very last breath. The words of misfortune that she manages to utter are as shown below, which is according to the legend.

After that, Mahsuri collapsed with white blood coming out of her open wound as she died at Padang Hangus

Photograph : Mahsuri as pictured the moment of her death and the curse.

The white blood symbolizes her innocence as Mahsuri is no guilty under the act of committing adultery. Slowly, according to the folk and history, the curse of misfortune unveil itself to the people of Langkawi.

Coincidence or the curse? No matter which one is it, Langkawi got attacked by Siamese and most of the people of Langkawi got killed during the incident. Wan Darus, Mahsuri's husband ran away from Langkawi along with Mahsuri's parents and their children, Wan Hakim or some may call him as Mat Arus after knowing the death of his wife.

Langkawi also faced other misfortune such as rice fields and granaries were set completely on fire. The proof? It can be found at Padang Matsirat where the burnt rice are still there. Some says that during the curse of misfortune, even the number of buffaloes exceeded the number of people in Langkawi.

As it says in the picture, this was the place where the burnt rice is located (PADANG MATSIRAT)

The Legend

Mahsuri being executed.
According to the legend, Mahsuri was a very beautiful girl. She was also a member of Thai family. She came down to Langkawi from Phuket. She has a husband named Wan Darus. They were living happily together.

However, in 1821, Thai invaded Kedah which causes Wan Darus, Mahsuri's husband to go out and fight. Mahsuri was left alone in the house. Coincidentally, she offered shelter to unknown traveller guy according to some version of the legend. This gives chance to the village chieftain's wife as she was jealous of Mahsuri.

The village chieftain's wife accused Mahsuri of adultery. The villagers later then caught Mahsuri and tied her to a tree. The village chieftain who still have grudges of not being able to make Mahsuri as his second wife, decided to executed Mahsuri. As she was stabbed by traditional Malay weapon called Keris, white blood flowed out of the place she got stabbed signifying her innocence. In her last breath, she cursed Langkawi for seven generation of misfortune.
